Smart Grid Security

Utility security was once focused on physical standoffs, fences, cameras, card access and locks to protect critical assets. Today, the utility security paradigm must consider myriad threat surfaces including smart meters and devices, customer usage information, two-way command and control networks, integrated systems and many others. As utilities look to deploy AMI, DA, Demand Response and other Smart Grid assets and functionality, security risk mitigation is a paramount concern.

The advent of stimulus funding to enable grid enhancements, coupled with high profile legislative concerns, means that security must become a core aspect of any Smart Grid initiative. Utilities must show that they and their partners have a cogent approach to mitigating security risk within their environment and initiatives. Further, this approach must consider not only the assets and systems that have traditionally been identified as "critical" but emerging assets such as smart meters, in-home devices, the potential for privacy breaches and identity theft, and even enabling integration with systems such as Meter Data Management Systems. Utilities must also broaden their awareness of potential threats from within their organization, within their service territory or across the world. It's no wonder that our clients are deeply concerned.
