Mobile GIS

Mobile GIS is a rapidly growing segment of the GIS market. Organizations are moving to leverage their investment in GIS data, replacing paper map books and microfiche, extending GIS functionality to field crews, and improving the quality and timeliness of facilities information in the field. This movement is enabled by advancements in mobile GIS application software and improved mobile computing devices with large data storage capabilities.

The initial interest in mobile GIS is typically replacing paper maps and reducing the time lag from when new facilities are placed in service and when that information is available in the field. More organizations are looking at mobile GIS as a platform to support a wide range of business processes, such as:

  • Capturing field edits and redlines to improve the quality of GIS data.
  • Integrating job sketches and cost estimating extensions into the work order design process.
  • Using mobile GIS as a foundation to provide access to other information needed in the field, such as service cards, leak reports, etc.
  • Integrating GPS information into navigation, locating facilities, etc.

Continued improvement of wireless communication networks will provide an additional boost to this segment as organizations look to share information among field crews to speed emergency response and outage restoration.
