Distribution System Planning & Reliability Forecasting
Distribution Planning Systems (DPS) are used by electric utilities for electrical network modeling, analyses, planning and optimization and by gas and water utilities for hydraulic modeling, analyses, planning and optimization. DPS tools are mature applications offering system planners and engineers both tabular and graphic user interface capabilities to create and analyze system models.
DPS technology automates many analytical calculations and rule-based heuristics previously performed by hand. DPS tools are designed to increase the effectiveness of system planners and engineers by allowing them to programmatically run scenarios for capacity and delivery quality constraints (e.g., voltage and power factor in electrical networks, pressure in water and gas networks), optimal network expansion/upgrade and device placement, load studies and maintain multi-year planning models for capital asset budgeting.
Other functions of DPS tools include protection coordination, regulator performance modeling, and motor start simulation. More advanced functions include system optimization, system expansion planning, predictive reliability analysis, load forecasting and integrated resource planning.
